Frequently Asked Questions

Waiting on a tax refund?
  • You can find the status of your tax refund HERE or if you are looking for your Amended return refund, you can find it HERE.

  • Note: If your return was electronically filed, you should receive your refund within 3-4 weeks. If your return was filed by paper, it can take 4-8 weeks for the IRS to issue the refund. If you have an amended return, the IRS can take up to 16 weeks to process the return.

  • Our office does not have any additional information from the IRS regarding refund statuses. The most up-to-date information can be found on the IRS website referenced above.

How do I pay the IRS?
  • You can pay via check made out to the “United States Treasury” or on the IRS Website. We recommend that you pay your balance online for easier tracking!
  • When you receive a copy of your tax return from us, it will include the voucher for the balance due &/or the vouchers for your estimated tax payments if appliable.

    Please refer to your Tax Return on Smart Vault to obtain copies of these documents.

Receive a letter from the IRS?
  • If you are a current client, please upload a scanned copy of the letter you received to the portal and notify us you have done so by phone or email. 
  • Once your CPA has reviewed the letter, we will inform you of our recommendations regarding the next steps.

How long will it take to complete my tax return?
  • We require all documents to be uploaded to our online portal, SmartVault. If you are a new client and don’t have a login one will be provided to you after your consultation meeting.
  • If you don’t have the ability to scan, please see the next FAQ for additional details.
  • Although we are streamlining our documents online, we still love to connect with our clients face to face, so don’t hesitate to reach out via phone or email to schedule an in-person, Zoom, or telephone consultation!
How can I provide my tax documents or other sensitive information?

We prefer all documents be uploaded to our online portal, SmartVault. If you don’t have access to your account, please contact our office and we can help.

Although we are streamlining our documents online, we still love to connect with our clients face to face, so don’t hesitate to reach out via phone to schedule an in-person, Zoom, or telephone consultation!

I don't have a scanner at home or work, is there a way I can send you my documents still?
  • Scanned documents (PDF’s), excel workbooks, and Word documents are the only way we can view your documents online.
  • We do not accept photos or any upload types other than what is listed above. If your documents are uploaded in the incorrect format, you will be asked to resubmit them.
  • To help out, we have created a template CLICK HERE that walks you through how to use your iPhone to turn your documents into scans.
  • If you do not have access to a scanner, you can bring or mail your documents to our office and we can scan them for you.
    • If you choose to mail us your documents: you will need to have your own copies of the documents made beforehand as we will shred them after they have been scanned for security and confidentiality reasons.
    • If you bring in your documents: you will need to have your own copies & if not, you will have to wait in our office until we are able to scan & return them to you.

It really is that simple!

How do I know when Walker & Associates has filed my tax return?
  • Once you have signed the DocuSign that has been sent to you, your tax return will automatically be filed by the end of that business day.
How do I speak with my CPA regarding tax prep, questions, etc.?
  • If you want to meet regarding tax questions, planning, prep etc. You can reach out via email or by phone to get a meeting or call scheduled. If you email our office, please copy an additional person to ensure your request is handled timely!
  • If you have any other questions regarding your return status, the online portal, etc. please check this FAQ page first as we have provided answers & resources to many of our frequently asked questions!
How long do I need to keep my tax records before shredding them?
  • As long as you have uploaded your documents to our online portal, SmartVault, you will never have to worry about record keeping as it securely stores your documents. If you choose to hold onto your paper copies, the IRS requires you keep 3 years from the date you filed your original return.
